Telecoms giant Deutsche Telekom has pushed plans to launch a German focused sports betting brand in the coming months after acquiring a 64% stake in Tipp3 Sportwetten GmbH.
Deutsche Telekom announced its acquisition stake in Tipp3 to German business news sources, company management did not disclose details of the sum of purchase in the operator. However the company did disclose that it would look to launch its new German sports betting brand within a three month period.
The Telecoms giant had been eyeing and researching the German sports betting market throughout 2014. Speculation that Deutsche Telekom would look to enter the German sports betting market by acquiring an operator, began in September 2014 when the Hesse Ministry of the Interior & Sports (HMDIS) awarded its first online sports betting licenses to regional and international operators.
With the German online sports betting framework still in its infancy, German newspapers report that Deutsche Telekom believe they can secure a substantial share of the German gambling market if they act rapidly and move into the market.
German business analysts and commentators believe that Deutsche Telekom can uses it mobile competencies to create optimal German sports betting products to engage consumers.
Deutsche Telekom will likely keep all Tipp3 as a separate business entity to its telecoms and technology operations
