LiveSport Media – 2015 in numbers: What we can learn from real time data

Neither a major football championship, nor the Olympic Games took place in 2015, yet it’ll remain vivid in the memories of many sport fans for some time yet. The All Blacks retaining the Rugby World Cup, Barcelona’s great run for the title in the Champions League, Conor McGregor’s UFC victory over Aldo and Novak Djokovic’s fantastic season, sports fans were simply spoilt for choice.

More and more these days these same fans enjoy utilising a second screen whilst watching sports events in real-time. Whether that’s laptop, a mobile device or even a wearable such as the Apple Watch, they allow fans to keep up with relevant information around the game, the need to know statistics as well as live scores from other games, leagues and even sports.

One such product keeping fans happy and in the know is FlashScore. With over 60 million monthly users worldwide it’s a comprehensive offering which delivers sports info 24/7 on 32 sports and 5,000 competitions globally.  Operated by LiveSport Media it is one of the most popular services worldwide for and averaged 267 million visits per month in 2015. A look at its data and findings from last year offers some useful takeaway on the numbers and stats, and habits of consumers of a variety of sports.

The manner in which it operates is key, despite being a global product it feels like a local offering due to the FlashScore network which consists of 60 localised sites which recorded over 3 billion visits in 2015. This was unsurprisingly the most successful year in the company’s history as it delivered 242,000 events.

The importance of forgoing a focus on football FlashScores(sports)

Football is huge, so huge that it has the dangerous prospect of blinding suppliers to other sports’ potential. Data from FlashScore reveals that football is the favourite sport for 61.5% of sports fans, but basketball and tennis combined account for a significant 19%.

FlashScore has also provided a breakdown of a sport’s popularity country to country and its data shows that tennis is biggest in the USA (albeit it by a slim margin), and that hockey is by far the most popular in Finland.

Most Watched List: 1 – Chelsea v PSG

With football the choice of sport through much of Europe, the Champions League with its glitz and glam has always been a focus of football fans’ attention throughout the continent and beyond.

A record-setting 3,116,740 users followed the Chelsea-PSG clash on March 11th 2015 on FlashScore websites. This was the day Thiago Silva grabbed a 115th-minute equalizer to send PSG to the quarterfinals. It’s Barcelona though that is the most followed team in FlashScore with close to 1.3 million users having viewed their profile.

The battle of the sports celebrities FlashScore (athletes

One very interesting piece of information to come out of FlashScore’s data is that three tennis players were among the five most viewed athletes for 2015.

The likes of best footballer in history Lionel Messi failed to make the cut, whilst his perennial rival Ronaldo only ranked 4th.

The winner was in none other than Bayern Munich’s Douglas Costa. His profile was visited almost 197,000 in 2015.

Novak Djokovic was his closest competitor, whilst Roger Federer and Simona Halep made up the rest of the top five.

Mad as a March hare – Who’s visiting and when?

Yet another useful piece of information is on the importance of the month of March. FlashScore averaged 267 million visits per month last year, but hit 350 million in March in what was the busiest year with 23,633 sports events shown.

The reasoning for this is clear; all the major football leagues are ongoing in March, and this is in addition to the Champions League, NHL or NBA are underway. The busiest day on FlashScore is the traditional day of rest Sunday with Mondays the quietest.

Almost half of LiveScore’s users visit from a mobile device though each visit is a lengthy 22 minutes on average.
