The World Cup is always one of the most popular events in the sporting calendar – and in some countries this popularity is particularly evident in the number of bets placed throughout the tournament.
But does this popularity translate into betting volume, when the country in question doesn’t qualify? In Colombia, the answer is a firm yes.
Last year’s World Cup not only “met the expectations in terms of online gambling”, but data from BtoBet’s latest industry report has shown that activity in the Colombian sports betting market reached an all-time high during the tournament.
From 20 November to 18 December 2022, more than 100,000 sports bets were placed both online and offline. Users are estimated to have spent between COP50,000 and 65,000 (US$10.96 and $14.24) a day on bets in December 2022 alone.
As well as assessing the Colombian market during the World Cup, BtoBet’s latest report takes a look at the reasons why sports betting remains so popular in this Latin American jurisdiction – addressing factors such as mobile penetration, internet usage, player psychographics and legislative changes.
As expected, the report found that bettors aged between 25-34 and 35-44 preferred placing their bets online.
Approximately 32% of bettors have placed a sports bet “more often in the past 12 months” compared to last year, whilst 31% have placed their first wager this year.
The BtoBet report reads: “Interestingly the survey indicated that Colombian players tend to be highly active, with almost 40% of respondents saying that they place a bet on a weekly basis.
“Whilst 5% have said that they bet on a daily basis, 21% have replied that they wager a few times a week, with another 13% of participants replying that they place a bet once a week.
“A further 20% of participants have said that they place bets a few times a month, 7% bet once a month, 17% have indicated that they wager a few times a year, 6% said they bet once a year, whilst 11% have indicated that they wager less than once a year.”
