Poland has moved closer to allowing legalised online gambling, as the European Commission approved the government’s plans to amend its gambling laws.

The European Union member will allow for foreign remote gambling operators to tender for national gambling licenses.

Following a review to its existing framework, Polish ministers have lifted operator requirements to be partnered with a local subsidiary. Furthermore International igaming operators wanting to enter the market, will not be required to have a polish operational base.

In 2014 the European Commission had been critical of Poland’s gambling framework, citing that it did not meet inter-state criteria with regards to EU competition policies and open business modules.

At present the Polish government has only granted four licenses to Fortuna Entertainment, Milenium, STS and Totolek, the government’s tough stance on online gambling activities has seen the withdrawal of several international operators.
