Flutter moves to strengthen LatAm position via FanDuel

Flutter Entertainment has entered into an agreement with Brazilian multinational mass media corporation Grupo Global, providing the company with daily fantasy sports (DFS) via its FanDuel subsidiary.

The multi-year agreement will see Grupo Global’s Cartola FC brand receive DFS services from FanDuel, with the main focus of the deal revolving around the launch of Cartola Express, a paid DFS platform.

Cartola Express will be operated by DFS Entretenimento as part of Cartola FC’s fantasy sports portfolio, sitting alongside the free-to-play services’ additional products integrated across Grupo Global’s digital and sports broadcasting networks.

For Futter, the agreement marks an expansion of its operations in the Americas, of which FanDuel has played a principal role in. According to Peter Jackson, CEO of the FTSE100-registered gambling group, FanDuel’s US activities have secured Flutter the status of ‘number one online sports betting operator by some distance’ in the country.

“In Cartola FC, Grupo Globo has built a pioneer in the Brazilian fantasy sports market, offering millions of players access to a first-class entertainment platform which is integrated across a vast sports media portfolio,” said Amy Howe, FanDuel CEO, who assumed her position last month, replacing Matt King who departed in June.

“This exciting initiative allows us to contribute to that success by adding FanDuel’s proven product capabilities and cutting-edge services. We’re looking forward to being a part of this initiative, offering players a new service  and the next generation of fantasy sports in Brazil.”

Grupo Global aims to bolster its current sports offerings via its agreement with Flutter, with its suite currently including daily Brasilero Serie A programming, weekly commentary shows such as ‘The LineUp’ and its GE online sports outlet GE as well as social media and digital influencer networks.

By linking with Flutter, the company hopes to further strengthen its DFS offering for its customers and build on its aforementioned Cartola FC product range as well as the Cartola PRO subscription option, which offers profile customisations, access to news, tips and competitions and gift card contests per DFS round.

Offering his own take on the agreement, DFS Entretenimento CEO Newton Filho said: “Daily fantasy sports is a fast-growing form of entertainment in Brazil and Cartola Express has the potential to take this to the next level.

“We’re proud to count on the expertise of FanDuel, which has been a leader in this field in the United States for more than 10 years, and we’re confident that our players will enjoy the benefits of their experience.”

Flutter’s interest in the Latin American sports betting and daily fantasy market comes as regional commentators predict significant growth in the region, with speakers at the SBC Summit Latinoamérica event predicting the development of a global gaming force in South America.
