Unibet – RWC 2015 to break all rugby wagering records

Despite host nation England not qualifying out of the group stage and no home nation’s side making the semi-finals, Unibet states that it had been delighted by Rugby World Cup 2015 trading.

Detailing market performance Ed Nicholson, Head of Unibet UK Marketing Operations commented that RWC 2015 will likely become the bookmakers biggest ever rugby market.

“We have been delighted with trading so far and England’s exit has not dampened the interest for punters. This will be Unibet’s biggest RWC ever, and we have seen a real move away from the traditional Pre Match betting markets towards our live product, especially with so many tight Quarter Finals last weekend.  We will be amazed if the final doesn’t break our all-time rugby turnover record.”

Noting marketing intricacies, Nicholson  added that ‘tight’ matches in the RWC group stages combined with shocks, had helped gain wagering interesting for the competition.

Wales’ defeat of England may have been a big surprise to the pundits, but not to our customers, as they were actually very well backed! Aside from that, it has been a particularly solid tournament – good turnover,  a few shocks – many of the so called smaller teams such as Japan, Romania and USA getting closer to the more established nations than many thought. But, with 3 of the 4 expected teams making the Semi Finals – according to the initial betting – ultimately the expected teams have progressed with only England missing out.”

Unibet’s strong RWC trading may however turn soar, if the heavily backed New Zealand side take home the Web Ellis Cup. Prior to the tournament beginning, the bookmaker had branded the side the “All Backs” due to their popularity throughout all RWC betting markets.

“It has to be anyone aside from New Zealand for our trading team! Unibet has a huge risk on the All Blacks winning the tournament with customers backing them front start to finish. Although we have had some potentially shrewd bets on Australia when they were as big as 9/1
