Following up on its insight and analysis into sports betting transaction during major sporting events, Worldpay  a payment processing operator with high coverage and major transaction volume within the online sports betting industry, has today released exclusive 2015 data showing how busy Britain’s online bookies were during Saturday’s  UEFA Champions League Final between Barcelona and Juventus.

Worldpay’s data shows that on the Saturday of the big game:

  • The number of transactions rose by 7.0%*
  • There was a 16.4% spike in the total value of transactions
  • The average transaction value increased by 8.9%*

Alan Watson, Vice President Gambling, eCommerce at Worldpay commented on the data

“This was a thrilling match with two teams desperate to complete a rare triple following their respective domestic league and cup wins. It was also a really busy day for Britain’s bookies with punters betting on both the Derby and the big game, on what would otherwise have been a quiet Saturday. There’s no doubt that smartphones and tablets have played a big role in this, providing the speed and accessibility expected by modern consumers and enabling them to place their bets while enjoying the build-up to the game.”

*Compared to an average Saturday in the weeks leading up to the final”.
