Biometric ID next step in battle against Buenos Aires child gamblers

The Province of Buenos Aires, has received a new bill to better control gambling participation amid an increase in minor gambling rates.

Put forward by reformist Diego Garciarena, the project aims to introduce biometric identification and limit the scope of gambling advertisements in order to prevent children from participating in gambling.

As reported by SBC Noticias, Garciarena commented: “It is not that we lack policies or legal-normative plexus regarding the issue: policies are failing generating a bureaucratic and enunciative Russian roulette, and with it, violating the guarantees of protection of our children and adolescents.

“Advertises for gambling platforms are still in force, there are no effective requirements for biometric control of access by age, licences continue to be granted and the proliferation of illegal betting sites is not attacked in a sustained manner.”

The changes to gambling advertising will see restrictions being implemented similar to Spain, where well-known public figures in the “field of knowledge, entertainment, arts, or sport” will be prohibited from participating in any type of gambling promotion.

Argentina has been battling a problem that has recently risen to prominence, with reports and concerns about children gambling piling up. Numerous measures have since been implemented to address this, including the temporary cessation of issuing new licences in the City of Buenos Aires.
