US daily fantasy sports operator DraftKings has announced its new product update which features the release of ‘DraftKings Leagues’.

Seeking to enhance its community and attract recreational DFS consumers, DraftKings Leagues will allow players to “Create leagues for you and your friends. Play in private contests in any sport all season long and track your results in your league’s exclusive leaderboard!”.

DraftKings players will be allowed to create private fully customizable ‘friend’ contests for 10 of its sports including the NFL, NASCAR racing, MMA, golf and eSports.

“Fans have been asking for this product for months, and now it’s here in time for NFL season,” said Paul Liberman, COO and Co-Founder at DraftKings.  “By giving our players an exclusive experience they can fully customize just for their friends, it’s like we’re giving them their very own personal DraftKings.”

DraftKings Leagues have been launched ahead of the start of 2016/17 NFL season (Friday 9 September). US tech news sources have reported that the private league functionality, continues DraftKings corporate goal of attracting casual sports fans to its DFS services.

Governance of the DFS operator had previously stated its concerns regarding the industry’s appeal to casual sports fans, who may have been put-off DFS products by the technical expertise and knowledge needed to participate in contests.

Speaking to Fortune Magazine this July, DraftKings CEO Jason Robins stated that his company would readdress its core marketing message as the company had placed “too much emphasis on the winning of money, and not enough on the other reasons why people play such as socialising with friends, competing and being able to study sports stats”.
