Best Holiday
Just back from a week in Marbella. The weather was gorgeous, but I couldn’t really recommend the venue given I spent most of the time in bed. No surprise really given I had a third left knee inserted; a hospital isn’t the best place for a summer break! If you are fortunate to have children, Disneyland is the best place in the world.
Best Album
Growing up, Free Live was my favourite, but now what I constantly play is Cradle to the Grave by Charlton fan Glenn Tilbrook and Squeeze.
Best Film
Boring, I know. But the Godfather trilogy, and Godfather 2 in particular, is the best film and best acting I will ever see.
Best Sporting Experience
Catching Imran Khan as a youth when 12th man for Lancashire vs Sussex at Old Trafford in the County Championship. I was also fortunate enough to score 72 points in a local basketball match on Merseyside which may still be a record.
Best Book
Having recently watched the Republican acceptance speech of Donald Trump in Cleveland, I couldn’t help but be reminded of the fantastic book, ‘Being There’, by Jerzy Kosinski. It was later played magnificently on screen by Peter Sellers.
Best Bet
The two bets that I remember most vividly were both losers; I’d backed Hawk Wing for the Guineas since he won the National Stakes at the Curragh as a 2-y-old. How he was beaten in the colts’ classic by stablemate Rock Of Gibraltar, I will never know.
I also backed Mr Snugfit to win the 1985 Grand National. The horse was caught close home by a 50/1 outsider (Last Suspect) whose trainer (Capt Tim Forster) gave the instructions “keep remounting” to his jockey such was his confidence. Note, had the race been run now Mr Snugfit would have won as the great race is now 90 yards shorter.
