Tottenham Labour Party MP, David Lammy met residents and councillors outside the Sugar Cane pub, in Lordship Lane, Wood Green to protest against sports betting operator Paddy Power plans to open a third retail betting shop in the area. The bookmaker plans to turn the privately owned pub site, into an area Paddy Power bookmaker.

Lammy and protestors are concerned about the promotion of gambling in the area, and the raise in anti-social behaviour, which protestors believe may be linked to the recent proliferation of betting shops in the London Borough of Haringey.

Paddy Power have hit back at the allegations of expressed by the protesters, the firm released a statement claiming that the company did not agree with the protestors and their claims regarding anti-social behaviour.

The corporate statement read “Paddy Power is a responsible operator that takes proactive measures to offer a safe, responsible and enjoyable leisure experience for its customers and the community”.

“Opening a new Paddy Power shop is a major local investment – we are investing more than £300,000 into this site which will create five new job opportunities and bring back to life a location that has been unoccupied for months. Our research shows that we bring additional footfall to other retailers in the areas we operate in”.

“So at a time when the UK high street is facing unprecedented challenges due to the economic downturn and the emergence of out of town shopping centres we believe we can make a positive contribution to local communities like Haringey.”

The Protest Labour Party MP, David Lammy, comes amid growing public concern on the raise of betting shops within UK councils. David Lammy called for the UK government to restrict the number of betting shops on UK high streets. The MP firmly believes that betting operators are targeting growth by specifically targeting the UK’s poorest areas.

New legislation will come into effect in May, making it possible for betting shops to open in an even wider range of premises without planning permission.
