Having begun 2015 in a positive light with the backing of a House of Commons, numerous senators and the Police authorities, Canada’s Single Sports Betting Bill C290 appears to have stalled once again in its progress into national law.

Bill C290 which looks to allow licensed gambling premises/enterprises to take bets on approved sporting events permitted by Canadian regulators, was intended to be reviewed by the Canadian Senate this January.

Nevertheless C290 progress has again stalled, with the bill showing no progress in terms of its review and future implementation. The step-back in progress has frustrated C290’s vocal advocates who have called for its progress since 2012.

Frustrated primary C290 sponsor, Senator and former Ontario legislature Bob Runciman, told numerous news sources that any progress on legalised single sports betting was unlikely to happen in 2015.

Brian Masse MP for Windsor and C290 supporter criticised the Senate perspective and stalling on the matter, stating that it had shown ‘total disdain’ for its supporters and their reasoning for its progress.

At present Canadian authorities allow betting wagering to be serviced via parlay bets / pools system, where the consumer has to predict numerous sporting outcomes in order to win money. The proposed C290 legislation would repeal a section of the Criminal Code that prohibits betting on a single race, fight, sporting event or athletic contest.
