New Jersey officials dismiss US Pro leagues challenge

Governor Chris Christie and New Jersey State pro sports betting officials have dismissed the legal challenge set by the four US professional (MLB, NHL,NFL, NBA) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) on grounds that their challenge cannot be credited.

This weekend New Jersey State will see Monmouth Park thoroughbred racetrack become the first licensed gambling venue to allow sports betting, thus bypassing laws set by the 1992 PASPA federal act.

The US pro leagues association and NCAA had filed a court motion in an effort to prevent New Jersey from offering sports betting. On Thursday a combined statement by the associations disclosed that New Jersey action were unconstitutional and potentially harmed the operations of professional sporting leagues in the US. The pro leagues and NCAA, have the support of the US Court of Justice on the matter.

New Jersey pro sports betting officials have claimed that the pro leagues association and NCAA would have to truly prove that their claim endangered their leagues operations. In a filing on Wednesday, the state accused the leagues of attempting to have federal government interfere with state affairs.

“Plaintiffs’ claims that their multi-billion-dollar businesses will suffer irreparable damage from even short-term wagering at Monmouth Park – when similar wagering has taken place throughout the State of Nevada for more than 50 years, and to a much greater extent – are unsubstantiated and cannot be credited,” the brief states, according to the Associated Press news agency.
