The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has warned streaming service provider 10 Play over breaching gambling advertising regulations.
The breach in question is about airing gambling advertisements outside of the allowed times during two live sports events.
An investigation was launched by the ACMA into the Network Ten Pty-owned company over complaints from viewers in relation to a couple of live streams on 14 October 2023, featuring the game between A-League Women’s Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets, and Australia’s friendly against England.
According to local advertisement rules, gambling advertisements shouldn’t be shown by online content providers during live sporting events between 5am and 8:30pm, including the five minutes before and after the scheduled times.
ACMA Member Carolyn Lidgerwood commented: “These rules are in place to minimise potential harm caused by gambling promotional content. Streaming services are expected to have systems in place to provide their ads in line with the law.”
A formal warning was issued by the ACMA to address the breach, stating: “This is the first time Ten has breached the rules around gambling advertising in live sports and it has cooperated with us throughout our investigation.”
If more breaches occur, further enforcement actions can be taken, including financial sanctions.
