ACMA flexes muscles in new illegal gambling crackdown

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has ordered the ban of eight illegal online gambling operators.

Since 2019 when the regulator first began enforcing its authority through blocking order requests, a total of 1,154 illegal gaming and affiliate websites have had access to them permanently restricted.

Furthermore, around 220 illegal services have also permanently moved out of the market as a result of Australia’s illegal online gambling framework that was updated in 2017.

Blocking orders can be issued as a last resort when customer safety is deemed at risk, with internet service providers (ISPs) placing websites on Australia’s blacklist when they’re believed to have breached the Interactive Gambling Act 2001.

The ACMA reminded consumers that even if an unlicensed platform looks as if it is a legitimate website of a reputable company, it still lacks the necessary measures to prevent gambling harms.

With its address of the public, the regulator urged players to better familiarise themselves with the legal gambling products available on the market by visiting ACMA’s website and going through the national register.

The latest websites blocked are JokaRoom, AUDPokies888, Aura Play, Instant Casino, Leon, Rich Papa, UUSpin and Wild Pokies.
