Taking over as the first Chief Operating Officer for industry live racing content and data supplier SIS (Sports Information Services), SBC speaks to Dominic Matthews on joining the ambitious SIS executive team

As part of his new leadership remit, Matthews will be responsible for all the operational and commercial teams across the business, ensuing alignment of both SIS’ strategic direction and the efficiency of its day-to-day operations.

SBC: As SIS’s new COO, do you have a clear idea of how you will operate within the role or is a period of assessment needed before you know what it will involve?

Dominic Matthews: My core role was outlined during in-depth discussions with SIS leading up to my appointment, which means I can hit the ground running. As always, getting to know the team and new organisational structures will take time, but I am confident that Richard Ames and I will be able to bring our industry experience to our roles and ensure a seamless management transition. One of my priorities in the next few weeks will be to understand the level of service we currently offer to our customers, and how we can build and improve on this in the future to ensure we remain a trusted partner to all.

SIS has a great heritage in the betting industry, which I know all about from my Ladbrokes days, but it is very important that we build on that, continue to stay relevant, and maintain our position as a leading, trusted supplier in the industry. We have some exciting new products in development and will be talking with our customers to ensure they meet their needs.

SBC: How will your extensive operator-side experience translate onto the supplier side? Are there any advantages or challenges that you envisage moving across?

DM: Having spent more than two decades at Ladbrokes, I believe I have a strong understanding of the industry, not just the operator-side but how relationships with the supply chain work as well. That has got to be a real positive as I start this new role with SIS.

I want to be clear that my focus is customers; first, second, and dead heat for third. Nothing else matters. This will be my mantra going forward, and so long as this continues and embeds within the SIS mindset, I expect a bright future. We have a lot to be excited about in the coming months.

SBC: Your CEO Richard Ames has talked of developing a more customer-centric focus to SIS’s output, what will this involve and will it require any notable change to how SIScurrently operates?

DM: Richard and I have been very clear in our early discussions with SIS management that our central focus has to be the customer, and the response to this call of action has been positive across the board.

It is very likely that there will be changes to be made over the coming months, but it is far too early for me to outline any specifics today. One thing I can say is that in the brief time I have spent with my new colleagues, it is evident that we have an extremely ambitious and highly-skilled team who will be able to action any necessary changes quickly and efficiently, for the benefit of our customers.

SBC: SIS has recently signed a significant broadcasting deal with Paddy Power, will similar commercial partnerships in the UK & Ireland be the focus going ahead or is SIS looking to diversify its products or look at new territories?

We aim to instil a customer-centric mindset throughout SIS’s various teams, and this will provide us with the platform to ensure we offer existing and prospective partners the best in class experience.

Our organisational goal is to ensure that the company is structured so that it can think, walk, and talk with the customer in mind, allowing us to operate effectively within the UK & Ireland, but also to be able to carry on taking our products and services to operators around the world, as we have been in recent years.

We have big plans to expand our existing product offering and to add exciting new content. We have so much of what retail bookmakers and online sportsbooks of all shapes and sizes, need within our portfolio – wherever they are in the world.

Our customers’ needs are our main driver and we will be talking with them constantly to ensure that we can innovate to deliver a successful partnership.
