West Ham United’s players are due a case of champagne from the betting industry after putting in yet another coupon-busting performance this weekend. The team’s 1-2 away victory at the Etihad against runaway leaders Manchester City was the most frequently picked match in people’s multiple bets this weekend, and it’s fair to assume the vast majority had marked ‘home win’.

It is the third time that the Hammers have unexpectedly won away from home this season, having already conquered Arsenal at the Emirates and Liverpool at Anfield, reportedly the first time any side has won at these three venues in any Premier League season.

And West Ham’s ropey home form has also further endeared them to the bookmakers, having been unexpectedly beaten themselves at the Boleyn Ground by Bournemouth and Leicester City.

Data from Team FA’s AccaTracker app showed a fine spread across a number of games going into the weekend, although the majority of the action was on Premier League matches.

Punters chose to stay away from ‘tough to call’ opening match which saw Chelsea beat Arsenal 2-0. Instead Saturday’s value was spread to the drawn matches of Swansea Vs Everton (0-0) and Stoke Vs Leicester (2-2) to bookmakers’ delight. Whether Watford’s 1-2 away win at Newcastle United could be viewed as a shock given the Magpies’ miserable form this season is open to interpretation.

Team FA director of Marketing Tim Pindar commented: “West Ham have certainly been the fly in the ointment for the ‘big’ sides and the punters so far this season. We doubt that many football accumulators will be so ready to back against West Ham in the near future, no matter who they are playing. They certainly made the weekend for the bookmakers.

“It will be interesting to see if support for Man City wanes this weekend when they play Spurs. But I have a feeling that they will still figure strongly. They are still the form team to beat after all, even with two home losses in a week.”
