GambleAware has accepted the resignation of Baroness Hilary Armstrong as a trustee of the charity leading the UK public health strategy for the prevention, treatment, and research of problem gambling harms.
A trustee of GambleAware since 2021, Baroness Armstrong has accepted the role of Founding Chair of the government’s newly established Digital Inclusion Action Committee.
Set up as a new agency of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, the Digital Inclusion Action Committee will serve as the government’s advisory body of experts to scrutinise, steer, and help determine the government’s efforts to reduce digital exclusion.
A Labour MP from 1987 to 2010, she has served as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Minister for the Cabinet Office, and Minister for Social Exclusion under Prime Minister Tony Blair.
The committee reflects the increasing importance of digital inclusion on the agenda of all levels of government due to its strong influence on social inclusion and the ability of people to access digital services.
Professor Siân Griffiths CBE, Chair of Trustees for GambleAware, said: “As Chair of Trustees for GambleAware, I send my sincere congratulations to Baroness Hilary Armstrong on her appointment as Chair of the Government’s newly formed Digital Inclusion Action Committee. This is a vastly important role, and one to which Baroness Armstrong will bring immense expertise and insight.
“Recognising the importance of Hilary’s new position, I have accepted her resignation from the GambleAware Board of Trustees with immediate effect.
“I would like to take this opportunity to share my most heartfelt thanks to Hilary for her hard work and commitment to addressing gambling harm since she joined GambleAware’s board in 2021. While we appreciate that she will be unable to continue in her role as a trustee for GambleAware, we are pleased to have her continued interest and support in addressing gambling harms.
“Hilary has had a significant impact on the charity over the years. Myself and everyone at GambleAware are immensely grateful for her support. We wish her all the best in her new role.”
