Marathonbet shuts down UK offering citing European conflict concerns

Marathonbet has this afternoon communicated that it will withdraw its presence from the UK betting market.

The pan-European sportsbook issued an email to its UK customers stating: “We regret to inform you that we have taken the decision to temporarily suspend our Marathonbet.co.uk website.”

Customers were informed that from 14 April 2022, Marathonbet.co.uk will no longer accept bets or deposits, and were further advised to withdraw funds from their accounts.

The email outlined that “as the Marathonbet brand is operated globally, recent and ongoing events in Europe have had a significant impact for us”.

Marathonbet has operated in the CIS markets of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan since 1997.

The betting group launched its UK presence in 2015, marking its new entry into western European territories that included Spain and Italy.

Establishing its presence in the UK, Marathonbet would operate its business under the domain of Panbet Ltd and opened offices located in the city of Brighton and Hove.

In 2019, Marathonbet was reported to have broken UK gambling sponsorship records by becoming the official partner of Manchester City FC – a deal that would see the bookmaker promoted on the front of the Premier League team’s training tops.

Long-established in Russia, Marathonbet was one of the few bookmakers allowed to offer an online sportsbook property by consent of Kremlin communications agency Roskomnadzor.
