Murray replaces Joshua as SPOTY favourite

After winning Wimbledon on Sunday afternoon, Andy Murray has moved ahead of Anthony Joshua as the bookmakers’ favourite to win this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year. AndyMurray

Murray is now 4/5 with William Hill to win the award for two years running, with Anthony Joshua at 6/1 and Welsh hero Gareth Bale at 8/1.

It was also revealed that bookmakers had to pay out an eight figure sum due to the Scot’s win, which marked his third career Grand Slam after his initial Wimbledon win in 2013 and the US Open in 2012.

2016 was a hugely successful year for Murray as he also reached the final in both the Australian Open and the French Open.

Will Hill Spokesman Joe Crilly said: “We not only had to pay out on Andy to win the match but we had him to win the entire tournament from day one and in doubles with Lewis Hamilton as well. Even with an Olympics ahead of us, Andy is odds on to win Sports Personality again.”
