Genius Sports has partnered with Premier League side Brentford FC for the introduction of an innovative live match augmented reality (AR) experience that leverages in-game data streams.
Highlight replays during games will now feature AR information such as shot speeds, shot trails, player names and pitch maps. Gtech – Brentford FC’s stadium naming rights sponsor – will also have its logo prominently visible across all highlights.
This will all be powered by Genius Sports’ Dragon technology, capable of capturing 10,000 surface mesh data points per player over 200 times every in-game second. This is possible due to Dragon’s ability to combine computer vision and rich data tracking with real-time broadcasts.
Steve Watts, Marketing Services Director of Brentford FC, commented “Everything we do at Brentford is through a fan-first perspective. Whilst we rate highly for matchday experience, we are always looking at ways we can improve and add something a little different when attending a game at the Gtech.
“As a club that owes much to a data-driven approach, we wanted to meet the appetite for fans who are also extremely interested in this aspect of the game. We think the additional analysis will be enjoyed by the majority of fans whether attending in person or post-match on socials.”
The first chance to see this technology in action will be this weekend’s (13 April) Brentford game against Sheffield United.
