bet365 Australia deploys controversial ‘click to call’ live betting mechanism

bet365bet365 (Australia) is the latest online bookmaker to adopt the controversial ‘click to call’ wagering service, which is currently being investigated by Australia’s Federal Police with regards to breaching live betting regulations.

The operator follows Ladbrokes Australia and William Hill, who implemented the wagering mechanism in April. Both operators have stated that ‘click to call’ betting features fall within the boundaries of Australian online betting regulations set by the 2001 Australian Interactive Gambling Act.

‘Click to call’ allows customers to take bets on live markets by activating their devices microphone and connecting with a bookmaker agent who will process the selected wager. The bet can only be processed, if the customer confirms its placement.

The UK operators believe that the wagering function falls within the Interactive Gambling Act regulations, since the audio link between the device and bookmakers operations would act as a phone call wager which is allowed by law

The controversial betting feature, has been criticised by national operators, who believe that the UK operators are breaching laws and illegally gaining online market share by offering live play wagering capabilities to consumers.

Following a month long review by the Australian Communications & Media Authority (ACMA), the regulator body for media was forced to hand over its investigation of the service to the Federal Police as the transactions were being placed locally by national consumers.

The Federal Police has set up a special unit to investigate
