Sportium say gracias y adios to Digital Director Mikel López de Torre

Mikel López de Torre has stepped down as Digital Director of Sportium, the Spanish sportsbook property of Grupo CIRSA.

Announced on LinkedIn, López de Torre confirmed the end of his near decade-long tenure as Digital Director of Sportium, beginning in 2014, during which he led the sportsbook’s online sales, operations, and marketing units.

CIRSA launched the Sportium brand in 2007 to unify its network of 3,000 betting points-of-sale operating across Spain and to begin a retail betting expansion within South American markets.

In 2013, CIRSA partnered with Ladbrokes to launch Sportium’s online offering as part of a joint venture. The JV partnership lasted until 2019, as Ladbrokes was forced to negotiate the €70m sale of its stake in Sportium back to CIRSA, a deal needed for Ladbrokes to be acquired by GVC Holdings.

López de Torre acknowledged that he had witnessed Sportium’s multiple transitions as CIRSA’s flagship sportsbook property and led the firm’s expansion within Spain and South America.

In his resignation statement, López de Torre thanked Sportium’s ‘early executive team and in particular CIRSA CEO Alberto Eljarrat “for entrusting Sportium’s Digital Business to me back in 2015, when it was in its very early days. Your guidance has been invaluable and has played a significant role in my professional development.”

Ending his tenure, López de Torre confirmed that former Entain executive, Pablo Delgado “will take the reins and keep you on your toes” as the new Digital Director of Sportium.

He concluded: “While I am excited about the new adventures that await, leaving this chapter behind is bittersweet. Ten years is 12.5% of a lifetime, but it’s gone by in a heartbeat. I’m eager to embark on this new journey and continue growing, but I also look forward to staying connected with all of you.”
