Entain has analysed the rate of UK support for England’s current EURO 2024 team, only to reveal somewhat disappointing results.
According to the sports betting firm, only 20% of UK bets have been placed on the Three Lions during the competition, despite the team finishing first in its Group C.
In comparison, 60% of Portuguese fans backed their nation, followed by Spain (49%), Germany (44%), and France (30%).
Staying in Portugal, 76% of local punters have placed a bet on Cristiano Ronaldo to become the top scorer in the tournament. Portugal’s team captain is also the favourite in Germany (22%) and Austria (20%).
In the UK, 25% of football fans have placed Harry Kane as the potential top scorer ahead of Ronaldo and Frenchman Kylian Mbappe.
Overall, the percentage of bets made by Brits on England to bring the trophy home has declined from 21% in 2021 to 13% in 2024. However, the total number of UK customers placing a bet on the EURO 2024 has more than doubled (121%) compared to 2021.
Jamie MacDonald, Head of Sportsbook Analytics at Entain, said: “There is no denying that the Three Lions have had a lacklustre start to EURO 2024. That’s exactly what we’re seeing in the betting data – a huge contrast to the most patriotic nations of Portugal, Spain and Germany, where fans are backing their home teams.
“Can England turn their nation around and bring it home? It’s all to play for as England enters the Round of 16 this weekend and hopes to ignite the pitch. We love seeing our customers excited, having fun, and being entertained – that’s what this tournament is all about.”
