Barry Fry charged by FA over alleged betting breaches

Barry Fry, the current Director of Football at League One side Peterborough United, has been charged by the FA for allegedly breaching betting rules.

The charges relate to claims that the former chairman-manager of the Posh had placed a bet during the 2017/2018 season, an action that’s forbidden for those involved in the game.

Issuing a statement, the FA outlined: “It is alleged that he placed bets on the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of, or occurrence in, football matches or competitions during the 2017-18 season in breach of FA Rule E8.”

Peterborough Chairman Darragh MacAnthony has thrown his support behind the club’s director of football, emphasising his belief that the charge was a “storm in a teacup” in a comment issued on Twitter. “Myself and club fully behind Barry on this,” he said. “Storm in a teacup and will be resolved and full facts revealed once his hearing happens and finishes etc. Trust me on that.”

The League One promotion challengers issued this statement on the club’s official website: “Peterborough United Football Club can confirm that Director of Football Barry Fry has been charged by the FA in relation to betting offences.

“The football club are working closely with the Football Association on this matter. The club will make no further comment at this time.”

The former Birmingham City manager and football veteran has until 6pm on 20 December to respond to the misconduct charge.
