Advertising watchdog, the Australian Association of National Advertisers (AANA) is set to launch a discussion paper addressing concerns regarding the promotion and marketing of gambling products to national consumers.

The discussion paper would cover gambling across racing and sports betting, gaming and other casino games, along with lotteries and scratchcards.

The AANA’s paper, follows this week’s announcement that New South Wales (NSW) regulators had banned the promotion of live betting services on TV and radio sports’ broadcasts.

The regulation of betting/gambling advertising has become a growing subject matter for Australian politics, media commentators and industry stakeholders, as calls grow for further regulation of the industry and its messaging.

However Sunita Gloster CEO of AANA stated that the paper would not serve to punish Australian betting operators, stating that it had been created to inform and educate active market stakeholders.

“It hasn’t been driven by any particular factor, but is a much broader framework to enable industry to deliver responsible marketing in this category.”

“Most importantly, it would protect the interests and rights of consumers by helping to ensure advertising and marketing communication is conducted responsibly,”

The discussion paper along with instructions for submitting a response can be found at aana.com.au.
