Betfair’s Ralph Ellis: Martin v Joshua could be closer than you think

There’s much talk about who’ll Anthony Joshua will fight after his next bout; will it be Fury, or perhaps David Haye? First up though he’s fighting the IBF World heavyweight champion Charles Martin, in what could prove to be a brutal contest. joshuaant

The fight is taking place at London’s 02 Arena on Saturday 9th April.

Betfair’s Ralph Ellis though believes there could be value in backing the underdog. Ellis stated: “His (Martin’s) back story shows a steady progression across his fights, taking several undefeated records away from opponents in the process. He’s 6ft 5ins so is evenly matched as far as height is concerned, and he’s also a southpaw which means a change in style that could cause problems.”

He continued: “I’d love Joshua to win the title and keep his romantic story rolling, but I can’t help but come back to the feeling that this is a 50-50 fight, and I’ve been saying that for a while now. That’s also how WBC champion Deontay Wilder has billed it. If that’s the case then backing the reigning champ at 4.70 to defend his title is too good to miss.”

Aside from the Dillian Whyte clash Joshua has won each of his fights within three rounds. Indeed he’s won 12 fights in either the first or second round. Charles Martin though will be by far his toughest test yet. A knockout in round five has some value with bookmakers including William Hill and bwin offering odds of 8/1 for this to occur.
