South Africa’s Trade & Industry Minister Rob Davies has suspended the country’s National Gambling Board pending the outcome of a forensic investigation.
The Trade & Industry ministry has confirmed its actions, stating that the National Gambling Board had been temporarily suspended pending further information. However it remained silent on its reasons for the actions undertaken.
Spokesperson Sidwell Medupe says two administrators will run the board until the matter is resolved. Medupe commented on the suspension of the National Gambling Board:-
“The forensic investigation will mainly cover the assets of the National Gambling Board and the minister has also appointed two administrators to oversee the day to day assess of the National Gambling Board. We are able to say how long this will take.”
South Africa is currently set to review its gambling laws, with a draft bill presented to government official in April of this year. The draft bill focused on centralising gambling legislation and presenting a new framework for monitoring and regulating online gambling in the region
