Argentina’s National Communications Entity (ENACOM) has confirmed that it has blocked a total of 1,000 illegal online gambling sites so far into the year.
As reported by SBC Noticias, the main goal of the prohibition efforts is to protect vulnerable people and children from the websites, which are often highly likely to not have any gambling harm prevention tools implemented in their offering.
ENACOM acts under the orders of Argentina’s Ministerial Chief of Staff, Guillermo Francos.
Comments on the milestone were made by several high-ranking officials, including ENACOM’s President, Juan Martín Ozores, who stated that the national media regulator remains ready to act “immediately” and collaborate with internet service providers to block access to illegal gambling offers in the country.
“We met with different institutions and organisations to join the fight against this scourge. From ENACOM we want all Argentines to be free to choose which platforms, apps and web pages to access, but within a framework of legality and responsibility to protect the health of children and adolescents,” Ozores said.
Darío Genua, Secretary of Innovation, Science and Technology, added: “We are aware that addiction to online gambling in children and adolescents is a scourge that occurs under the protection of websites that promote illegal betting.
“We are committed to working in an articulated way with other organisations to prevent the development of these illegal platforms, and promote initiatives that promote responsible digital citizenship, taking care of the mental health and emotional development of children.”
