Fantasy eSports company Vulcun has announced that it has had to lay off 14 members of staff. This is believed to be in the region of 25% of the company’s employees.
This follows the decision to close down its real money fantasy eSports competitions.
Vulcun Co-Founder Ali Moiz told The Verge in an email: “The company is transitioning to a new direction, and unfortunately this is a painful but necessary part of the process.”
He added: “We are actively helping these people look for new jobs, so if anyone is interested in hiring them, they can contact ali@vulcun. We’ll have more announcements about our new direction coming shortly in the next few weeks.”
Vulcun paid out over $10 million (£6.9m) to players last year, but the eSports fantasy market has faced legal difficulties after major daily fantasy operators FanDuel and DraftKings began including it in their offerings.
It’s unclear which new direction Moiz means in his statement but as The Verge also reported a source close to the company said that enquiries had been made in regard to eSports streaming.
