Durba Sinha Roy, VP of iLottery Platform Product, Draw and Growth at Brightstar Lottery, elaborates on where the optimal opportunities reside for those looking to make significant headway within the sector.

Despite being the foundation of most lottery portfolios, draw games remain underrepresented online.  Industry data shows they make up only a fraction of total digital lottery sales, highlighting a significant growth opportunity for operators.

Meanwhile the iLottery channel is growing at a 41% compound annual growth rate, with quarterly gross sales reaching $3.6 billion in the second quarter of 2026, per the U.S. iLottery Tracker from Eilers and Krejcik Gaming.

This disparity tells a story. Digital lottery is thriving. Draw games, the category that has traditionally anchored lottery portfolios, are falling behind in the channel that represents the industry’s future.

The question worth asking is not whether draw games belong online. It is why they have not yet found their footing there, and what it will take to change that.

The gap Is structural, not circumstantial

The shortfall in digital draw performance is easy to misread as a marketing misstep or a matter of player awareness. It is neither. The gap is built into the way traditional eDraw games were conceived.

These games were designed to mirror retail mechanics. A player selects numbers, completes a purchase, and waits for a scheduled draw.

At the bricks and mortar retail counter, that model is elegant. The transaction is fast, and the wait is part of the ritual that has defined lottery for decades.

Ported directly to a screen, however, the same model asks something unreasonable of a digital-native audience: it asks them to embrace passive, draw-dependent play in an environment that has conditioned them to expect interactivity with every tap.

The consequences are predictable. Digital-native players drift toward eInstants and the wider world of mobile entertainment competing for their time. Draw games, for all their familiarity and trust, risk becoming a category the younger audience simply scrolls past.

What makes this worth solving is the economics. eDraw carries one of the strongest margin profiles in the iLottery portfolio, with traditional payouts averaging around 50%. That is high margin and backed by a loyal player base. The opportunity for draw games online is real.

Incremental fixes fall short

The instinct, when a category underperforms, is to refresh it. A new theme. A cleaner interface. A promotional push. None of these fixes address a structural gap, because none of them change the fundamental nature of the play. A passive experience with a nicer coat of paint is still a passive experience.

Closing a structural gap requires structural thinking. The moment calls for a genuinely new category, one that preserves the trusted foundation of draw games while reimagining the experience for a digital-first audience.

The window Is open. Now.

The conditions for a new lottery category have rarely been more favorable. Digital is now a primary channel, not a supplement.

Players are actively asking for experiences that feel interactive and engaging. And the draw game category, with its trusted foundation and strong economics, is ready to be reimagined.  It’s time that lotteries evolve draw games for the digital-first future.
