Betfred settles call centre redundancies

Settling out of court with trade union Unite, Betfred has agreed to pay 88 workers of its defunct Wigan Tote Park call centre employee compensation totalling £470,000.

The settlement will see an individual average payment of circa £5,300 per employee. Through trade union Unite the workers had issued legal proceedings calling for Betfred to honour redundancy terms relating to contracts

The Wigan call centre had been inherited as part of its 2011 £250 million acquisition of former state owned betting operator Tote. In recent years the call centre had seen a reduction in the volume of phone call wagers as Betfred customers moved online.

Following a review of its operations, in December 2015, BetFred governance announced that the Tote Park call centre would be closed.

Issuing a short statement on the matter Betfred commented “Closing the call centre was a difficult decision but it was no longer viable with the shift to online betting. We are pleased to have reached an agreement with the staff and wish them all the best in their future careers.”
