Boylesports owner bails out Orchard County after pre-match brawl

Armagh GAA are set to be fined €5000 (£4000) following a punch-up prior to their Ulster Championship clash against Cavan on June 8th. However, Boylesports, which is owned by Armagh native John Boyle, have decided to pay the fine.

The scuffle is believed to have started when the Armagh team lined up behind the band’s Cavan flag. It resulted in Cavan’s Martin Dunne leaving the pitch with his arm in a sling, and appears to show a spectator getting in on the action.

The Central Competitions Control Committee has imposed five suspensions and two substantial fines, with Armagh’s Brendan DonaghyKieran Toner and Andy Mallon receiving one match bans. The County Board said it will appeal the ruling.

Leon Blanche, Head of Communications said: “The Armagh team have no longer the financial burden holding their Championship progress back and with thanks to John Boyle, Paul Grimley’s panel can now concentrate on a crack at winning a 15th Ulster Championship and a 2nd All-Ireland Football title.”

A spokesperson from the Armagh County Board said: “The Management Committee of Armagh GAA would like to thank John Boyle and Boylesports for helping us out of this financial predicament.”

He added: “Now that the fine has been paid, we can focus solely on football matters and hopefully progress further throughout this year’s championship.”
