Chile’s gambling authority, the Superintendence of Gambling Casinos (SCJ), revealed that progress is going strong on building a healthy relationship between the regulated market and society.
As reported by SBC Noticias, the authority’s annual performance showcase highlighted the milestones achieved in 2023 in terms of the responsible allocation of casino permits.
A statement by Superintendent Vivien Villagrán reflected on the “work that has been done around the processes of granting operating permits of gambling casinos and on the prompt dictation of the regulations that regulate the platforms that develop online games”, thus strengthening “the construction of public value, through a work of excellence combined with the control and promotion of responsible gambling.”
That said, Chile’s focus remains on the regulation of the online gambling and sports betting segment, while other countries in the region are establishing their regulated markets, which address this international technological flood, Lucia Gando of SBC Noticias said.
SCJ’s gambling development strategy will keep building on from the achievements in 2023 and continue well into 2024, to increase the competitiveness and public value of the industry and integral projects on national and local level.
In Gando’s words, this would allow the Chilean gambling authority to generate an ethical framework that contributes to regulatory compliance in the operation of gambling casinos and development of a responsible gambling strategy, preserving public faith.
This updated framework would then incorporate new trends of development of the industry by maintaining a harmonious industry-community symbiosis, along with all the necessary safeguards that should come with it.
Another highlight of the 2023 performance showcase was the SCJ’s National Responsible Gambling Strategy that is being carried out in partnership with the Ministry of Education.
“This strategy has as its main objective to promote a culture of entertainment and care of people around gambling, through actions to prevent problematic gambling in coordination with the different public and private actors that relate to these matters,” the SCJ explained.
The strategy is also being utilised as a stepping stone in the fight against Chile’s illegal gambling sector that the gambling authority has devoted itself to. This is being carried out in close cooperation with various municipalities and their respective police forces, to try and root out the commercial exploitation of gambling machines outside regulated casinos.
Villagrán summarised by concluding: “We continue with the work that seeks to enhance our action in such a way that institutional performance continuously improves in efficiency and quality, in accordance with our legal mandate.”
