Almost as anticipated as the fight itself, last week’s Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather vs ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor press conferences have evoked the imagination of punters.
The tenacity of McGregor appears to have renewed faith from punters that he has something unpredictable planned for 26 August.
Paddy Power’s Lee Evans told SBC: “We were forced to cut the odds on McGregor throwing a kick after a huge amount of interest from the punters. And, honestly, after the press conferences so far, could you really rule it out?”
Whilst boxing pundits remain dubious about McGregor’s chances, the Irishman has promised to defeat Mayweather in four rounds, a promise, it seems, that punters have faith he’ll keep.
Price said that he was ‘hardly surprised’ that punters have shown a ‘decent amount of interest in the fourth round knockout, because Mystic Mac gets it right more often than not – and certainly more often than the bookie’.
William Hill also reported a huge surge in support for McGregor, revealing that 83% of all bets on the bout have been on a McGregor victory.
William Hill Spokesman Tony Kenny commented: “Conor McGregor, with no professional boxing experience, should be a 100/1 shot to beat arguably the greatest boxer of all-time.
“However, our punters seem believe McGregor could create one of the great sporting upsets on 26 August..”
Evans is much more confident about the pricing of a certain market around the next publicity bash though: “Our next market will be the amount of times he says ‘f***’ in a press conference. We’re currently setting the bar at 50. And that’ll be odds on.”
