Sports sponsorships in the global betting and gaming industry never sleep. This week alone has already produced some huge deals, which will be seen by millions of sports fans around the world.
This edition of Sponsor Spotlight brings you an unconventional partnership in the second-highest English football tier, a potential end to an era in elite rugby, a very interesting commercial tactic from BOYLE Sports, and the start of what could maybe be called the Premier League’s first ‘gambling-light’ season.
London.Bet not short of ideas
Charlton Athletic FC, one of London’s most historic clubs founded in 1905, has secured a steady stream of financial backing thanks to London.Bet’s sponsorship for the 2026/27 Sky Bet Championship season.
All league and cup fixtures will include the London.Bet logo on the Chalrton men’s first team back-of-shorts across their home, away and third kits, including goalkeeper strips – together with on-pitch LED displays and press conference backdrops.
Matthew Jones, Chief Financial Officer at London.Bet, said: “We have plans in place for activations that reward Addicks supporters through the season and campaigns that give something back to the area around The Valley.”
Betfred rumored to exit Super League
For nine years in a row, the most elite rugby competition in Europe has carried the name Betfred Super League.
However, media reports have emerged that this might be coming to an end, with no tasks allegedly taking place. However, a source familiar with the matter stated that no final decisions have been made either way.
Being one of the longest running and most expansive sponsorships in UK sports, the potential end to the deal will certainly not be lost on anyone in either Betfred nor the Super League.
Manchester United adapts to new Premier League era
Front-of-shirt gambling sponsorships in the Premier League will be left in history as soon as the new season kicks off.
This has forced both football clubs and operators to adapt to the new realities, with Manchester United and Betway being the latest to do so.
The Betway logo will now adore the Premier League grand’s training kits, in a sponsorship deal reported back in May to bring the club a fee of around £20m.
There is an argument to be made that training kit sponsorships are even more valuable compared to primetime game ones in terms of visibility, given the exposure they get through official social media posts and the fact players train multiple times a week as opposed to having just one official game in the same time frame.
BOYLE Sports unlocks unique marketing path
As mentioned above, front-of-shirt gambling sponsors will now become extinct during the new Premier League season.
However, BOYLE Sports might have found a workaround to still put its name next to some of the biggest English football clubs, and its logo is even bigger than it could have ever been on the front of a shirt.
Mere days after being named the official betting partner of Leeds United, the Irish bookmaker has announced that it will sponsor a pre-season game between The Peacocks and Manchester United.
Titled the BOYLE Sports Cup 2026, the game taking place on 12 August is far from a friendly. Not only are both clubs fierce domestic rivals, but they will also play at Croke Park – making it the first ever club football match at the historically Gaelic athletics-only stadium.
A similar format had previously been done with West Ham’s Betway Cup prior to Boyle also taking the sponsorship reins there. However, this was only reserved for West Ham facing international teams.
A gambling-sponsored, one-off friendly trophy with two Premier League football teams facing each other close to home is a first, and whether consciously or not – BOYLE might have just started a trend that will be copied for years to come.
Spotlight rankings: Who’s standing out?
1. BOYLE Sports Cup
Funding a massive standalone and unique club football trophy at the 82,000-seater capacity Croke Park is historic through and through.
As mentioned above, BOYLE has unlocked a brand new strategy in UK football marketing playbook, which has the potential to expand into an annual broadcasting spectacle replicated by other Premier League teams and their gambling partners in a landscape increasingly hostile towards gambling marketing.
2. Betfred/Super League
If true, Betfred exiting the Super League will put an end to a decade-old era of symbiotic brand recognition.
Joanne Whittaker, Chief Executive Officer of Betfred, once said it herself – “rugby league is part of who we are”.
Just like in real life, breaking up such a long-term and fruitful relationship will heavily impact both sides. If that happens, it will be interesting to see who will be the next partner of choice for both Betfred and Super League, and whether they will be as happy as they were in their previous tie-in.
3. Manchester United/Betway
No surprises here putting this as our third entry. Times are changing, so are Premier League football clubs. One of the most logical moves is to attract new gambling sponsors as training partners, which many many have already moved to.
4. London.Bet/Charlton Athletic FC
Understandably for everyone else except Charlton supporters, this is the smallest sponsorship on today’s list.
Still, that doesn’t mean it’s not one of the most interesting ones given the back-of-shorts placement of London.bet’s logo, which is a complete opposite of the Premier League where shorts are kept completely clean of sponsors outside of a few exceptions.
Putting a logo on a pair of shorts, however, will have a difficult chance of rivaling any of the other news in our top-three selection.
