Welsh FA will investigate suspicious betting patterns

The Welsh Football Association (FAW) has launched an investigation into allegations of match fixing in the Welsh Premier League. PortTalbot

The inquiry began after the FAW was alerted to suspicious betting patterns as Port Talbot lost 5-0 to Rhyl at the weekend. Rhyl had not won for 17 matches prior to this comprehensive victory.

An FAW spokesperson said of the news: “We have been made aware of the allegations made. We have started an investigation and are working with the relevant authorities.”

Walesonline reported that the directors of Port Talbot Town called a meeting with players on Wednesday evening during which time the claims were discussed. As the club at the centre of the investigation, it appears that Port Talbot want to establish themselves whether any of their players were involved in any betting. At the beginning of each season players in the Welsh Premier League sign a declaration which prohibits them from placing bets on any league matches.

A Port Talbot spokesman said: “At the moment we are aware of the allegations and we will be conducting an internal investigation and working with the FAW in regard to it. The club has a zero tolerance policy with anything of this nature.”

The FAW has also made it clear that no Rhyl players are under investigation.
